Thyroidectomy
A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid gland. There are different types depending on the extent of removal:
• Total Thyroidectomy: Entire thyroid gland is removed.
• Hemi Thyroidectomy: Only part of the thyroid is removed.
Reasons for Thyroidectomy:
• Thyroid cancer
• Thyroid nodules (growths)
• Graves' disease (hyperthyroidism)
• Hashimoto's thyroiditis (hypothyroidism)
Complex Thyroid with Tracheal Resection:
In some cases, thyroid tumors can grow large enough to involve the trachea (windpipe). This might necessitate a complex surgery combining thyroidectomy with tracheal resection.
• Tracheal Resection: Removal of a portion of the trachea.
• Reconstruction: The remaining healthy ends of the trachea might be reconnected directly or using a graft.
