Swallowing Rehabilitation
Swallowing rehabilitation is a specialized program designed to help individuals regain or improve their ability to swallow safely and effectively following head and neck surgery or radiation therapy. Swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, can result from damage to the muscles and nerves involved in swallowing, leading to challenges with eating, drinking, and managing saliva.
Our multidisciplinary team of speech therapists, swallowing specialists, and nutritionists collaborates to develop individualized swallowing rehabilitation plans tailored to each patient's specific needs and abilities. Treatment may include exercises to strengthen swallowing muscles, techniques to improve swallowing coordination and timing, and strategies to manage symptoms such as choking or coughing.
In addition to exercises and techniques, our team provides education and counseling on dietary modifications, such as texture modifications or swallowing techniques, to make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable. We also offer guidance on managing related symptoms, such as reflux or dry mouth, and provide support to address any emotional or psychosocial concerns related to swallowing difficulties.
Our goal is to help patients achieve optimal swallowing function, improve their quality of life, and regain confidence in eating and drinking independently.
